Lasik Vs. Smile- Which Is Best For You?

LASIK, on one hand, is widely known and a popular surgery and SMILE on the other hand is a newer and lesser-known procedure.

LASIK and SMILE both are spectacle removal surgeries but their methods are different. So is SMILE better than LASIK? Well, a lot of people seem to be skeptical about which one they should opt for.

Lasik seems to be more trustworthy because it has been around in healthcare for around 20 years while smile looks more of advanced and modern age technology.

To end this confusion, we are here to provide you clarity regarding both the procedures and help you decide which one is better for you.

Difference between LASIK and SMILE- SMILE vs. LASIK

1- Treatment-

LASIK can treat all the refractive errors i.e, Myopia, Hyperopia, and Astigmatism. A SMILE can treat only two of them i.e. Myopia and Astigmatism. So in terms of scope LASIK is ahead of SMILE surgery.

2- Procedure-

In the LASIK surgery, a flap is created around the cornea (the transparent part of the eye) then the surgeon uses a laser to reshape the cornea, and finally, the flap is closed after the procedure whereas in SMILE surgery a very small cut is made with the help of laser to reshape the cornea.

Unlike Lasik, SMILE uses completely bladeless technology. So in this case SMILE is better than LASIK.

3- For Dry eyes and thinner cornea-

If you have dry eyes or thinner cornea, then LASIK surgery is not suitable for you. In that case, you should go for SMILE surgery without a doubt. SMILE being the new procedure has actually overcome these two disadvantages of LASIK and has paved the way for those people who are suffering from these two vision errors,

4- For athletes and with physically intensive occupation-

If you are a sportsperson or in an occupation that includes more physical activity then SMILE is a better choice for you. The reason is that in LASIK surgery flap is created so there are chances of its displacement if any injury is caused. In SMILE surgery, the flap is not created so flap related complications are not there.

5- For higher-order aberrations-

Higher-order aberrations are much more complicated than refractive errors. They cannot be corrected through glasses and contact lenses and they create difficulty in seeing at night. This can be treated only through LASIK surgery. A smile cannot treat this vision error.

6- Time is taken for surgery-

The time duration of surgery for both LASIK and SMILE is the same. Both surgeries require 20 minutes to get completed. So both LASIK and SMILE are at par in this criteria.

7- Recovery-

The recovery in the SMILE is faster than LASIK. It takes only 2-3 days to recover after SMILE surgery whereas at least a week is required to recover after LASIK surgery.

8- Safety-

SMILE is considered safer than LASIK because of the two reasons-

1) the flap complications are eliminated in SMILE surgery

2) The size of the incision (cut) in SMILE is much lesser than that of a LASIK surgery.

So these are the differences between LASIK and SMILE. Based on these parameters you can decide which one is best for you.

SMILE is definitely one step ahead of LASIK surgery in many terms but if you have the problem of hyperopia or higher-order aberrations, then LASIK is the only option for you.

To decide which one is best for you, notice the kind of vision error you have, and most importantly, consult an ophthalmologist because he/she is the best person to advise you regarding the same.
