A healthy lifestyle, good food habits is very essential for good eyesight.

Regular eye examination by an ophthalmologist is the key to keep good care so they can detect any changes which can hamper the vision.

Healthy dietary habits that we must practice for our eye health:

Eat Healthily

Food rich in antioxidants proves to delay some eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts Green leafy vegetables like spinach,  zucchini,  collards,  kale Orange fruits and vegetables rich in beta carotenes like carrots and papaya. Food rich in omega 3 fatty acids like codfish, salmon are important for healthy macula Eggs, nuts are good protein sources citrus fruits.

Balanced Diet

Avoid Sugar.

Having an excess of refined sugar, more so in predisposed individuals can increase the risk of cataract, glaucoma, retinopathy and macular degeneration

Salt Intake

High salt intake can increase blood pressure and can have an indirect effect on increased intraocular pressure.

Maintain Hydration

Take sufficient quantities of fluids to keep yourself hydrated. Normal tear production and tear quality depend on water intake and dehydration can lead to dry eyes.

Avoid Excess Caffeine Drinks

Coffee contains caffeine which can lead to oxidative stress when taken in large quantities.  Coffee can be replaced by green tea which contains various antioxidants to protect our eyes from macular degeneration

Include antioxidants supplements

Include antioxidants supplements who are prone to macular degeneration or have macular degeneration, antioxidants help in delaying the disease.

Maintain Hygiene

Hand wash is very important because we usually keep touching our eyes frequently which can cause diseases like conjunctivitis.  Avoid touching eyes.

Know Your Family History

We should be aware of diseases that run in families like diabetes, hypertension,  glucoma, and should take precautions and get ourselves consulted frequently to know the status of eyes.

Taking care of the eyes is important.  We should immediately consult the eye doctor if we start having blurred vision,  distorted vision,  eye pain, floaters, etc.
